The Brain's Energy Crisis

Amy Berger is a nutrition specialist and author whose work helped introduce me to the metabolic dimensions of Alzheimer's disease and cerebral energy dysfunction.

I first became aware of Berger through Dr Eric Westman. She later co-authored End Your Carb Confusion with him, although that was not the book that shaped my own thinking. The work that had the greatest influence on me was Berger's The Alzheimer's Antidote.

Berger did not originate the hypothesis that Alzheimer's disease involves profound disturbances in cerebral energy metabolism. Rather, she synthesised a growing body of research and presented it in a coherent and accessible form for a wider audience. Her work helped introduce me to a perspective that viewed Alzheimer's not solely through amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, but also through the lens of cerebral glucose hypometabolism.

She also discussed the increasingly used term “Type 3 Diabetes”, borrowed from the scientific literature, not as a formal diagnostic category but as a provocative description of the severe metabolic dysfunction observed in the Alzheimer's brain.

This shifted the scope of the metabolic argument considerably. Carbohydrate restriction, nutritional ketosis, and improvements in insulin sensitivity were no longer relevant only to obesity or type 2 diabetes. They also became plausible approaches for improving neuronal energy availability and supporting cognitive function.

Importantly, Berger did not present dietary intervention as a cure for Alzheimer's disease. Her position was more measured: metabolic dysfunction represented an important component of the disease process, and restoring access to usable fuel deserved serious clinical consideration.

Her work also stood out for its clarity. Through books, lectures, interviews, and public education, Berger consistently translated complex metabolic science into language ordinary readers could understand and apply.

Her contribution to The Power of the Lion therefore extends beyond Alzheimer's disease itself. Berger helped expand my understanding of metabolic dysfunction from body weight, glucose regulation, and insulin resistance into cognition, memory, judgement, and personality.

Metabolic health was no longer simply a question of living longer. It was also a question of preserving the quality of the mind that experiences those years.

Amy Berger has personally reviewed the way her work was represented in The Power of the Lion. Her feedback identified that an earlier version of the section gave her too much credit for the development of the metabolic or “Type 3 Diabetes” interpretation of Alzheimer's disease.

That feedback was incorporated. The revised manuscript now distinguishes clearly between originating the hypothesis and synthesising and communicating the existing scientific literature.
