Michael Eades
The Anthropological Witness
Michael Eades is an American physician and author whose work helped extend my understanding of metabolic health beyond modern clinical trials and nutritional policy into anthropology, evolutionary biology, and paleopathology.
Together with his wife, Dr Mary Dan Eades, he co-authored Protein Power, an influential early work on carbohydrate restriction. Eades had already spent decades practising low-carbohydrate medicine when his interests began to move further into the evolutionary and archaeological evidence surrounding human diet.
A particularly important moment came while reading Arno Karlen's Napoleon's Glands. Eades encountered a reference to vascular disease in ancient Egyptian mummies that appeared difficult to reconcile with the conventional assumption that such disease was principally a consequence of modern lifestyles and high-fat diets.
Rather than simply accepting the observation, he followed the references.
Eades has described how this led him into the paleopathological literature, the Paleopathology Association, anthropology, and eventually a much broader investigation of what ancient human remains could reveal about diet and disease. This intellectual journey forms the basis of his presentation Paleopathology and the Origins of the Paleo Diet, which became the principal audiovisual source used in developing his section in The Power of the Lion.
One important component of that investigation was the expensive-tissue hypothesis. Human brains are metabolically costly organs. The hypothesis proposes that expansion of the human brain during evolution was accompanied by a reduction in the energetic demands of other expensive tissues, particularly the gastrointestinal tract. Increasing dietary quality and the consumption of energy-dense animal foods offered a plausible mechanism through which that evolutionary trade-off could occur.
Stable-isotope evidence provided another perspective. Nitrogen isotope ratios preserved in ancient tissues can help estimate trophic position. Research discussed by Eades placed Neanderthals and early modern humans at high trophic levels, providing evidence for substantial reliance on animal foods during important periods of human evolution.
Eades also examined what happened when human populations transitioned from hunting and gathering to agriculture.
Archaeological comparisons discussed in his work showed increases in dental disease, nutritional deficiencies, infectious disease and other markers of declining health following greater dependence on agricultural staples. The significance was not that every hunter-gatherer population enjoyed perfect health, but that major dietary transitions could leave measurable biological signatures in the human skeleton.
Ancient Egypt provided another striking example. Egyptian civilisation developed around an agricultural system heavily dependent upon grain, particularly bread. Yet modern imaging of Egyptian mummies has demonstrated substantial vascular calcification and atherosclerosis.
For me, these observations expanded the historical scale of the metabolic problem.
Industrial food processing may have greatly accelerated modern metabolic disease, but Eades's work suggested that the underlying dietary mismatch could be much older.
Through Eades, I also discovered the physician Blake Donaldson and his book Strong Medicine. Donaldson had used meat-based diets clinically decades before the modern low-carbohydrate movement and interpreted human nutrition through an explicitly evolutionary framework.
Eades therefore occupies a distinctive place in The Power of the Lion. His contribution is not simply another argument for carbohydrate restriction. He helped me recognise that nutritional hypotheses can be tested against more than contemporary clinical trials.
Human remains are evidence.
Bones are evidence.
Teeth are evidence.
Stable isotopes are evidence.
Disease preserved in ancient tissue is evidence.
Anthropology provided another window through which the modern metabolic condition could be examined.
