The Hidden Cost of Workplace Stress

Stress is often discussed as though it were simply an emotional experience.

A difficult conversation. An approaching deadline. A demanding customer. An overflowing inbox. A disagreement with a colleague or manager.

Most people recognise these situations as stressful, yet relatively little attention is given to what is actually occurring beneath the surface. The reality is that stress is not merely a feeling. It is a physiological event.

When the brain perceives a threat, whether physical or psychological, a cascade of biological responses is triggered. Heart rate rises. Vigilance increases. Stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol are released. Glucose is mobilised into circulation to provide readily available energy.

These responses evolved to help organisms survive immediate challenges. In the natural world, stress was often acute and temporary. A threat appeared, the body responded, and recovery followed.

Modern life is different.

Many of the challenges encountered today are not physical threats, yet the body frequently responds as though they are. Workplace conflict, financial uncertainty, long working hours, poor sleep, and chronic psychological pressure can repeatedly activate systems that were originally designed for short-term emergencies.

The result is not simply a mental burden. It is a biological burden.

This distinction becomes particularly interesting when viewed through the lens of evolutionary biology.

Most mammals possess the ability to synthesise vitamin C within their own bodies. During periods of physiological stress, production can increase substantially, providing additional support for systems involved in adaptation, repair, and recovery.

Humans, however, lost this capability during the course of evolution.

The stress response remains. The mobilisation of energy remains. The hormonal response remains.

What does not remain is the ability to manufacture additional vitamin C in response to increased demand.

This creates an intriguing asymmetry within human physiology. The mechanisms that generate stress are still present, but one of the adaptive responses available to most mammals is absent.

Whether viewed from the perspective of workplace wellbeing, public health, or personal resilience, this observation highlights an important principle: stress is not simply a matter of mindset. It is a biological process that carries genuine physiological consequences.

This does not mean stress should be feared. Nor does it mean that all stress is harmful. Challenge, growth, learning, and achievement often require periods of increased demand.

The objective is not to eliminate stress from life.

The objective is to understand that adaptation requires recovery.

In a culture that often celebrates productivity while neglecting physiology, this may be one of the most important lessons of all.

The body can tolerate remarkable demands.

But every demand has a cost.

And every cost must ultimately be paid.
